"From Gérard de Nerval's Sylvie to the Contre Sainte-Beuve, travel, quotation and poetic creativity in the first notebooks of A la recherche du temps perdu ". A la recherche du temps perdu, is obviously not a travel narrative, yet the story of a calling, and that of a quest for truth, seem to borrow the outer markings of this genre, enriching with its specificities the proustian novel. Florence Godeau and Yves Bodelle's critical studies have stressed the predominant part played by this travel theme. Taking up from there, we would like to discuss the genesis of some of the travels included in La Recherche, confronting them to Nerval's inter-text which supports their narrative and theoretical elaboration. In the years 1908-1909, while his novel is taking shape, Proust undertakes a critical analysis which leads him to write two rough drafts of an article on Nerval. In them, he reflects on poetic creativity as well as on the relationship existing between prose and poetry in Nerval's work. This explains the presence of a series of quotations associating both poetic texts and prose narratives, stressing their mutual interactions. From one version to the next of Proust's article on Nerval, quotations become fewer, giving way to a Proustian discourse on the theme of travel. In a later notebook this results in a travel narrative where only the poet's imagery has been retained, by now completely integrated by the critic turned novelist. This intertextual play definitely belongs to a reflection on literary creativity, the travel theme having become both metaphor and poetic device. Indeed, the preface to Sylvie, along with the numerous songs quoted by Nerval enable us to define what poetic creativity consists in, an interesting starting point with which to confront Proust's own understanding of the concept. The travel theme which always remains a background one for both authors, cannot be dissociated from reverie and reminiscence, producing an impression of "déja-vu" and thereby allowing to re-construct reality on an individual basis. This process, for both writers, lies at the core of their poetic creativity. In a final stage, one may thus better define the place occupied by Nervalian intertextuality within Proust's aesthetic discourse on travel and literary creativity. Lastly, one may also better define the bonds uniting romantic sensibility and its modern Proustian expression as found in A la Recherche du Temps Perdu.
